Hope on the Horizon

36Smile! Day 36

I started a new psoriasis treatment today for my scalp. It's the laser therapy. I am very optimistic about this.

One, because that's really the only way to stay positive when you're living with an incurable disease.

Two, I feel I am at one of the best dermatology treatment centers who specialize in psoriasis called The Dermatology Associates.

Three, I have pretty much tried everything out there for my psoriasis so why not try something else.

I can't emphasize enough to my NPF mentees how important it is to see a dermatologist who actually specializes in psoriasis. My doctors at DA are incredible, super friendly and highly intelligent. They sat down and explain everything to me, didn't make me feel embarrassed and suggested other methods that I hadn't thought of. I highly recommend them!

When I was first diagnosed, about 90% of my body was covered. That's when my Houston dermatologist suggested light therapy. My entire body cleared about after about 3 months of light therapy and tar baths—it was as nasty as it sounds— but I am happy that it worked.

So I can only be positive that this will do the same. At least manage it for awhile.

But of course, every person reacts differently to every treatment out there. At least the side effects of this laser therapy—mild sunburn—aren't nearly as bad as some of the others with the biologics: lowered immune system, risk of TB, etc.

I will posting how my body is reacting to the treatments here. Mainly for me and for others out there who do have psoriasis so they can see how it affects me and maybe give them a hope in a new treatment.

36Smile! is blog where Sabrina will be writing about and sharing memories that make her smile 365 days of the year! Too often, we are wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of this crazy little thing called life. We should take time out to enjoy the little things that make us smile and celebrate it!

  1. Good to hear! Let me know how it goes. Mine has been under control pretty recently except for small flare ups that my doctor refers to as "stress related flare ups"
